Oahu Skincare Tips: Dr. Shelbi Jim On Discusses the Unique Skincare Needs of Island Residents

At Mālama Dermatology in Honolulu, Dr. Shelbi Jim On has built a reputation for personalized care rooted in both dermatologic science and an understanding of the island lifestyle. We sat down with Dr. Jim On to talk about how Hawaii’s climate and culture influence skincare needs—and what local residents can do to protect and nourish their skin.

Q: Dr. Jim On, how is skincare different in Hawaii compared to the mainland?

Dr. Jim On:
Hawaii’s environment is unlike anywhere else. The combination of intense year-round sun, high humidity, saltwater exposure, and even volcanic vog (air pollution from volcanic emissions) creates very specific skincare challenges. People here are outdoors a lot—surfing, hiking, gardening—which is wonderful, but it means the skin is constantly exposed to UV and environmental stressors.

Q: What are some of the most common concerns you see among Oahu patients?

Dr. Jim On:
Sun damage is number one. We see it earlier and more often here than in other places—things like hyperpigmentation, actinic keratoses, and early signs of skin cancer. I also treat a lot of melasma, especially in patients with Asian or Pacific Islander heritage, which is more common in our population. Acne and fungal conditions are also frequent due to the humidity and heat.

Q: How should island residents adapt their skincare routines?

Dr. Jim On:
First, broad-spectrum sunscreen every single day, even when it’s cloudy. I often recommend mineral-based sunscreens that are reef-safe and non-irritating. Second, gentle cleansing—sweat and sunscreen buildup can clog pores, so it’s important to wash thoroughly, but without stripping the skin. And finally, hydration. Despite the humidity, many people skip moisturizers, but UV exposure can dehydrate the skin. A lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer helps repair the skin barrier.

Q: What’s one skincare myth you’d like to debunk for Hawaii residents?

Dr. Jim On:
That darker skin tones don’t need sunscreen. This is absolutely not true. Melanin does offer some natural protection, but not nearly enough to prevent sun damage or skin cancer. Everyone, regardless of skin tone, should wear SPF 30 or higher daily.

Q: How do you approach patient care differently at Mālama Dermatology?

Dr. Jim On:
We take a very localized, personalized approach. I listen carefully to patients—not just their symptoms but their lifestyle, environment, and skin goals. Whether it’s selecting products that work in high humidity or treating pigment conditions common in Asian and Pacific Islander communities, we tailor care to the individual. Mālama means “to care for,” and that’s truly what we strive for with every patient.

Q: Any final advice for Oahu residents when it comes to skin health?

Dr. Jim On:
Don’t wait until there’s a problem. Annual skin checks are key—especially in Hawaii where UV exposure is so high. Prevention and early treatment can make all the difference. And when in doubt, ask a board-certified dermatologist. We’re here to help you protect the skin you live in.
